Pike Tactics and Pike Fishing Lures

A little bit understanding of how a pike is built and how it behave to select the right sort of pike lures when we go pike fishing. A pike is a complete predator but is totally different from salmon,a pure predator too. These two predators feed only on other fishes but use unlike methods.

A salmon swims more or less perpetually and seeks prey.It often follow large schools of fish and attacks from behind or underneath with high-velocity and force. If the prey spots the salmon and tries to get away, the salmon follow it to hunt it down.

A pike, on the opposite are a hider. It hide behind logs, weeds, stones and other things in the water.Once a prey fish comes close enough it begins an ambush and take the prey in one quick move. Why do these two predators use so dissimilar tactics in their hunting operation?

The reply to that is how they are built.A salmon can be equated to a wolf.A wolf are always on the move while hunting and burns a small amount of energy in portions of its muscles to sustain a steady phase. When it`s required it can accelerate to full fastness and hold it for relatively long period until the target is laid down.Maybe you have noticed when filleting a salmon, that a thin layer right under the skin is brownish or dark red. This layer is a group of muscles that the salmon is using when it swim around seeking prey.

To maintain this speed over time, the muscles need a continuous flow of blood. This group of muscles has good blood supply and therefore it has this color. The majority of the salmons muscles have lower supply av blood and are only used while the fish need full throttle.

If you've fillet a pike you might have noticed that there is no brownish layer under the skin as to the salmon. That entails the pike has very little supply of blood to all of its muscle mass.A pike, can be compared to a lion.A lion is a sprinter with lots of muscles to put down large preys. These muscles also let the lion to accomplish very high speed but in very short distances.

So a pike and a lion practice hiding tactics to come close to they're prey and then ambush with very high speed to catch it.But because all of its muscles have very pitiful supply of blood, a pike can only give full gas in a very short period.

One can equate it to a human sprinter too, extremely high speed in few meters and then totally exhausted. Therefore it can not swim and look for prey,if it did it would be tired in few minutes. So, a pike have to cover, have to move around very slowly. When a pike move, the swimming are slow and often just the fins are working to make it move forwards. This is also a good matter as its harder for preyfish to spot it when it barely moves.

Now we know how a pike is made and how it act.Now its time to realize how it feeds.A pike`s access to nutrient is mainly limited to hiding and ambushing when it comes to fresh healthy prey, but as other prosperous predators it plays on more than one string.

Pike have territories too and a big pike always have its own territory which it protects and patrols daily. If a different pike comes into it`s area, the owner chase it off or kills it if it`s smaller. When a pike is patrolling the territory it hunts as well. The pike move along the bed very slowly and sneak upon a target from behind or underneath as its hard for a fish to spot it towards the bottom.

A predator as the pike is always looking for wounded or weakened fish and when it spots a fish which is showing signals of weakness it turns into a "salmon" and start a hunt to chase it down.A weak fish has slow responses and can not hold it for long when it`s pursued. All pikes recognizes this instinctively and responds spontaneously.

Basically it`s very uncomplicated selecting pike lures. Pike fishing lures resembling a sound fish or prey have to be introduced near and in the right angle to a pike to be taken, but a pike lure which resembles a weakened fish will be taken from all angles and much longer lengths. So it`s a much greater chance to land a pike when simulating and sick fish or a slow moving water creature as toads or little water birds. Now its up to you to decide and find pike lures that imitates these motion patterns.
